We have just finished a very succesful videoconference course which took place on the 20th and 27th of January.
FOSTERING READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS TO PROMOTE STUDENTS' LEARNING
203 teachers from the 9 provinces in Castilla y León enjoyed the training sessions with expert teacher trainer, Shawn Redwood who showed different activities and examples to promote reading skills from infant to adult education.
The main focus was on the fact that comprehension is the understanding and interpretation of what is read. To be able to accurately understand written material, children need to be able to decode what they read; make connections between what they read and what they already know; and think deeply about what they have read.
One big part of comprehension is having sufficient vocabulary, or knowing the meanings of enough words. Readers who have strong comprehension are able to draw conclusions about what they read – what is important, what is a fact, what caused an event to happen, and which characters are funny or have specific features.
Therefore, comprehension involves combining reading skills with thinking skills and reasoning.
